Sideboard Guide: 5C Humans (5/19)

Back by popular demand, it is your Humans sideboard guide for the month of May. I was going to skip this month as the format is in a very uncertain place. However, there was significant interest and we have the results of SCG Louisville to go off of. With this in mind we are going over how to sideboard against and what to name with Meddling Mage for twenty-five Modern archetypes. The full-length, printer friendly PDF is available for download here. It is perfectly legal to bring it to a tournament and look at it between games.

The Build
As always, there is only so much you can change with this deck. There are only two notable things about the maindeck. First is that I have dropped the Island for a second Seachrome Coast. This is always an awkward decision when Gaddock Teeg starts to get good again. UW Control is the primary reason we want Island and the primary reason we want Teeg. Unfortunately, Teeg absolutely hates Island. Teeg is surprisingly difficult to cast and Seachrome can cover the white requirement while Island cannot provide mana for him at all. The flex slot is Militia Bugler and I do not think I am going to waffle on this anymore. I was impressed with the card from the beginning and it has never failed me. As time has gone on the vast, vast majority of high level tournament results feature it. I am not going to question it and I am now running two. I had to trim a Freebooter to get the second in there but I am not very comfortable with the configuration; though it is tournament proven. Furthermore, I am not running Sin Collectors so I may be too low on this effect in general right now. The sideboard is fairly typical though I am favoring Kambal over Sin Collector at the moment. Gaddock Teeg, as explained in yesterday’s article, is pretty vital right now. Whirler Rogue is there as a mirror-breaker and a solid card against UW Control. I have had Izzet Staticaster and Phyrexian Revoker recommended to me recently but I am not a fan of either.

Going Forward
Without large event data sets to go off of and so much uncertainty on the horizon, I was not going to write this guide. However, our readers have made it loud and clear that they wanted it. In light of Modern Horizons and the London Mulligan, there absolutely will not be a sideboard guide in June. I will write something Humans-related to hold you all over but there are new cards to test and a brave new format to tackle. It will not be possible to write a guide that I can stand behind until things settle down in July. The only ideas I have at this time are new cards from Modern Horizons and I recommend that you test them for yourselves as well.

Wrap-Up
This should cover anything you need but if you need additional assistance, please join the Modern Humans Facebook group. Are there any cards that you are interested in testing from Modern Horizons thusfar? Do you have any wishlist cards that you are still holding out on? Tell us about it in our discussion group. Or if you would like to take a swing at writing content for the site you can contact us directly here. We will be back tomorrow to provide a basic guide to evaluating Modern spoilers. Until then my friends.
